Saturday 13th November saw me take in a double-header – back to back Tercera games in Alcalá de Henares!
⚽️ RSD Alcalá 1-1 CD Galapagar
🏟 Estadio Municipal del Val, Alcalá de Henares
🏆 Tercera RFEF, Group 7
I’d not been to an RSD Alcalá home game since March 2019, so the chance to pay a return visit, as part of a double-header in the town no less, was welcome.
Almost straight away, I ran into a problem, the first game was due to get underway at 4:15 but didn’t actually kick off until 4:30, meaning that the vital gap between the two games for walking between the grounds had almost completely disappeared, which would have repercussions later on.
Alcalá started off in the manner you’d expect from their league position, forcing a number of early chances, but the game changed completely in the 9th minute when a Galapagar counter attack finished with a great cross and Pliego got up at the back post to nod in and hand the visitors a lead against the run of play.
With Alcalá stunned by the goal, they could have gone further ahead, their number 22 Héctor, with his distinctive pink hair, was causing the home defence no end of problems, most notably when he drew goalkeeper Degre badly out of position, forcing him to try and fail to bring him down, and just missing the target from an acute angle.
I moved to the fondo behind the goal for the second half to make the most of the sunset at the opposite end of the ground. Meanwhile on the pitch, Alcalá were laying siege to the Galapagar goal, albeit without truly testing their goalkeeper.
Unfortunately for Galapagar, they couldn’t hold on – in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Alcalá finally levelled matters, Izan managing to get his free kick over the wall and see it sneak past the Galapagar goalkeeper at his near post.
Alas I didn’t see the equaliser as I’d already left for game two of the day…
Amenities Watch: El Val is one of the biggest stadiums in the Tercera, Alcalá really should be playing at a higher level, and it has the facilities to match. A couple of refreshment kiosks and a merchandise stand were busy before the game and at half-time.
Match Rating: 8/10 – I enjoyed this one, Galapagar’s early goal gave it a bit of an edge and they were always dangerous on the break while Alcalá poured forward in search of an equaliser.
⚽️ AD Complutense Alcalá 2-0 CDF Tres Cantos
🏟 Campo de Fútbol Recinto Ferial, Alcalá de Henares
🏆 Tercera RFEF, Group 7
I missed kick off at the Campo de Fútbol Recinto Ferial thanks to the late start down the road, but I obviously hadn’t missed much as the game was still scoreless.
AD Complutense’s ground could hardly be more different from their near neighbours’. While EL Val is open, with seats all around and a real grass pitch, Recinto Ferial is tight, with one small stand and an artificial pitch. I did enjoy being able to stand pitchside for the duration of the game.
With both sides already looking set for a season in the relegation dog-fight, the first half was rather low on incident with a couple of good saves by the two goalkeepers the outstanding moments.
But the second half was a much livelier affair, especially after Complutense made the breakthrough, a superb cross from the left being headed in at the back post by Del Valle. It was precisely the kind of cross that is impossible to defend against at any level of football.
On 68 minutes, Tres Cantos basically sealed their own fate, Ángel heading past his own goalkeeper from a corner to put the home side 2-0 up. They never looked like giving up their lead nor increasing it as they mostly seemed to hit wildly ambitious long range shots which were of more danger to cars outside than the Tres Cantos ‘keeper.
Amenities Watch: The bar at Complutense earns points for having a view (albeit a limited one) of the pitch from inside and tables outside allowing you to enjoy your drink and bocata while watching the action. There was no merchandise visibly on sale but I did spot a few people with scarves so it does exist.
Match Rating: 7/10 – What I saw of the first half was quite dull, but after the first goal the game did open up a bit and it was generally good fun.
