It’s the final 2020/21 in Pictures of the season and what a ride it has been! Obviously not my most well-travelled season but I’ve still been able to have a great time exploring the lower league scene in Madrid.
So it’s only fitting that I close off the season with a couple more Botti games as they bid farewell to the Tercera.
⚽️ SAD Villaverde-San Andrés 0-1 AD Complutense Alcalá
🏟 Estadio Boetticher, Madrid
🏆 Tercera Division Group 7
And so down to Villaverde for the last time this season for their last home game of the campaign. Because it’s always nice to see Botti.
Could they go out with a bang and give the small crowd who turned up on a baking hot Sunday morning something to cheer about? Well, no, but it was relatively entertaining nonetheless.
The first half was goalless but not entirely without incident although things only really took off after the break when Complutense had a goal disallowed for offside and as a result of excessive protests, they were reduced to ten men.
Villaverde had a few chances to make their man advantage count, but as is their traditional problem, they just couldn’t make them count, this season will go down as a case of some good performances marred by near-misses which could have made a huge difference in how things turned out,
The only goal of the game came in the 82nd minute – coincidentally not long after I’d remarked that the game had 0-0 written all over it. Ortiz beat Villaverde goalkeeper Damian with a cool finish to boost their hopes of staying up – the following weekend they would make sure, defeating Pinto to book another season in the Tercera.
Bar Watch: The usual kiosk was open and given the temperatures, was kept busy throughout the game.
Shop Watch: I didn’t actually see the scarf hanging behind the bar on this occasion, but I’m sure there were some on sale.
Match Rating: 6.5/10 – To be honest, the happenings on the pitch were of little consequence but on a lovely sunny morning the game did manage to produce enough moments to keep the small crowd entertained.
⚽️ DAV Santa Ana 4-2 SAD Villaverde San-Andrés
🏟 Polideportivo Martin Temiño, Madrid
🏆 Tercera Division Group 7
As the season started, so it finished – with me watching Santa Ana win. Ironic given their fortunes this season. I’ve probably seen them win more often than some of their fans.
There was nothing really at stake here. Santa Ana’s position at the bottom of the Tercera has long been a mathematical certainty, while Botti are awaiting the outcome of an appeal which could potentially grant them a reprieve from relegation.
Thankfully this was a much more open and entertaining affair than their previous meeting last month. Santa Ana got off to a flying start with a goal inside two minutes from Julio Martín.
Álvaro Boveda added a second before a great volley from Álex Blanco made it 3-0 after the half hour. Botti hadn’t even played badly, just everything Santa Ana hit seemed to go in. In contrast, Botti had a goal chalked off for a marginal offside just before the break.
But they started the second half with that momentum still on their side and managed to reduce the deficit to a single goal with two goals inside three minutes from Adrián and Diego Caro – the first of which I celebrated particularly happily as it brought up my personal century of goals seen this season.
But there was to be no epic comeback to round off the season as four minutes from the end Jorge Fernández added a fourth for the home side to secure their win and ensure they bid farewell to the Tercera with a win.
Bar Watch: A great final day out at the Santa Ana bar (sadly still missing the Fernando Morientes shrine) under the stand. A pre-match coffee and a half time bocata with the meat cooked on the barbecue.
Shop Watch: Still no sign of anywhere to buy a Santa Ana scarf.
Match Rating: 8.5/10 – a great end of season game where both teams put on a show despite the lack of anything at stake.
And that’s a wrap for 2020/21 in Pictures. All that remains is my end of season awards post which will be coming in the next week or so.
