2018/19 in Pictures: Game 34

Back to one of my favourite venues in Madrid for a real game of two halves as I bring up a century of goals for the season.

Game 34: Leganés 2-2 Eibar (Estadio Municipal de Butarque, Leganés, Madrid – 26.1.2019)

A Saturday evening kick-off and cheap tickets brought me back to Butarque for the second time this month and the game didn’t disappoint.

Well, in the end it didn’t. The on-pitch action in the first half hour was so unmemorable that I was mostly concerned with capturing photos of the sunset, which was truly spectacular.

Then Eibar scored. Slack marking from a corner allowed Kike to power home a free header. And before too long it was 2-0, Joan Jordán finding the top corner with a superb free kick which left Pichu Cuellar rooted to the spot. Don’t believe me? Watch it for yourself…

Leganés were all at sea and were suddenly facing the prospect of their long unbeaten run at Butarque being brought to an end by a direct relegation rival. However, just as they had done in my three previous visits, they raised their game after the break.

Almost instantly they had a response, Martin Braithwaite slipping the ball through to Youssef En-Nesyri who held off a couple of defenders before drilling a left-foot shot into the net. Suddenly it was all one-way traffic, with Leganés laying siege to the Eibar goal, with the visitors’ back four seeming terrified of En-Nesyri every time he got the ball.

They had every right to be worried as the young striker was on fire and grabbed a deserved equaliser for his team, meeting Bustinza’s cross with a towering header which left Dmitrovic with no chance.

Leganés could have won it, Braithwaite was clean through on goal but got the ball caught up under his feet before he could shoot and the chance was gone.

A draw was probably fair all things considered. An excellent evening’s entertainment for €20 and it brought up a major milestone for my season- En-Nesyri’s first was the 100th goal of my season. Here’s to many more before the end of the campaign!
